In his youth, John Philip Sousa, the grandson of America’s great composer and conductor by the same name, received large sums of money as a guest bandleader.  Soon, however, his conscience began to trouble him.  He knew that he was asked to conduct because of his famous ancestor, not due to his own ability.  In fact, the younger Sousa couldn’t read a note of music.  So he decided to give up his lucrative charade and start earning a real living.

Have you ever pretended to be someone you are not?  Could you be masquerading as a devoted disciple of Jesus, when in fact you’re a spiritual sham?  That question is as shocking as an ice-cold shower, but I know from personal experience that self-deception is possible.

The sin that Jesus most often denounced was the hypocrisy of the Pharisees.  They were playing the role of God-fearers, but not living in holy and grateful obedience to His will.  Jesus saw them as “blind guides” and said that they cleansed the “outside of the cup” but inside were full of extortion and self-indulgence.

Are we just pretending?  That question compels prayerful self-examination.  It should motivate us to make the needed changes in our attitudes and in the way we live.

We must approach God’s Word as if our lives depended on it -- because they do!  That’s motivation!

WOMEN’S Ministry Corner

_____________________________________________________________

Women’s Ministry would like to invite all of our ladies to a time of learning to pray together on September 23rd and September 30th, from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. in the Good News Sunday School classroom. We will use the A.C.T.S. pattern with sentence, conversational, or popcorn style prayers, so everyone can participate and contribute as the Holy Spirit leads. It is a great time for those who are unfamiliar with praying out loud. As we just completed the study on the Holy Spirit, we can continue seeking God’s greatness, guidance and grace for our families, church, community, country, world and missionaries.

 Special Thank you………

To FBC Family,
Ron and I would like to thank our church family for all the support through cards, prayer, texts and calls during this difficult time with the passing of my mother.
Love you all
Ron & Kerri Garber

To First Baptist Church,
Thanks so much for your weekly prayers on Wednesday nights for Charles during his illness and death.  It meant so much to us each week as you were the only prayer group we received either card and/or letter from each week.
Charles always looked to see if his friends, Wilbur Butler and Joe Bledsoe were in attendance.  He always smiled when he found their names.
To the other members of that prayer group, thank you for praying for someone you did not know.
It meant so much to us.  May God continue to bless your group as they pray for others on Wednesday nights.
Frances Justus

First Baptist Church of Collinsville,
Thank you so much for participating and leading your church in the 2019 Baby Bottle Campaign. This center would not be able to run without the support of amazing churches like you. Your church raised $1,278.69!!
I also wanted to share a great story with you. This year we had a couple new churches participate in the campaign. In one particular church there just so happened to be a lady who had never been to that church and who had not actually been to church in general in a long time. She went that particular day because she was very upset having found out the night before that her daughter was pregnant and intended to abort the baby. That day, the church was talking about the baby bottle campaign in the service and also spoke on True Options and what we do. The lady had never heard of us before. She was able to make an appointment for her daughter to be seen the very next day and thankfully her daughter agreed to go. We are so happy to report that the mom-to-be has decided to carry and parent the baby! What an amazing story! God is doing great work here and we are so glad that we all get to be a part of it!     Standing for Life,
Bri Berry, True Options Development Director

To our church family –
Thank you so much for all the prayers during Heath’s hernia surgery and recovery. We appreciate your thoughtfulness so much!
In Christ - Heath & Holly Odell
